In a recent survey 75% of respondents said their company is chronically short of leadership talent (War of Talent). Being an effective leader like a marathon is an endurance event. Matt’s talk, “Leadership is a Marathon” provides principles that leaders can use to empower, energize, and inspire themselves in order to do the same for those they lead. Matt uses his experience of running a marathon as a metaphor to share leadership strategies learned through personal experiences and graduate work in Transformational Leadership.

    • 3:30 - 3:45 p.m. - Break

    • 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. – Average Managers Play Checkers...Great Leaders Play Chess | Amy Leslie, CEO, Perspective Consulting and the following panelists: Anissa Elsey, VP of Human Resources, Nazdar; Amy Ellzey, Head of People & Culture, Virgin Mobile USA; Annette Glary, Executive Director of HR, Associated Wholesale Grocers; Shannon Johnson, EVP/Chief HR Officer, UMB Financial Corporation, Aileen Wilkins, HR Executive, H&R Block; and Cyndi Willoughby, Senior Manager of Human Capital, United Way of Greater Kansas City!

The difference? In checkers, all the pieces are uniform and move in the same way; they are interchangeable. You need to plan and coordinate their movements, certainly, but they all move at the same pace, on parallel paths. In chess, each type of piece moves in a different way, and you can’t play if you don’t know how each piece moves. More important, you won’t win if you don’t think carefully about how you move the pieces.  - Marcus Buckingham.
In this session, you will understand the difference between tactical management and strategic leadership. Learn how to win by learning how each person on your team moves; and learn how your "chess pieces" fit into your overall strategy.

    • 4:45 p.m. – Closing Comments
