When Work Works is a nationwide initiative that brings research on workplace effectiveness and flexibility into community and business practice. It is a project of Families and Work Institute (FWI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). SHRM-KC is excited to join When Work Works as a community sponsor.
The When Work Works initiative is grounded in the results of nationally representative studies of employees and employers, which have found that flexibility is a key ingredient in creating effective workplaces that can yield important work-related outcomes for employers. In fact, employees in effective and flexible workplaces report:
o greater engagement on the job;
o greater job satisfaction;
o greater desire to stay with the organization;
o better overall health; and
o lower stress levels.
Who supports this initiative locally?
SHRM-KC and the Women’s Foundation are “community sponsors” promoting this initiative locally for the Kansas City metro. The City of Kansas City, through the office of Mayor Sly James, is also participating.
This is an initiative also supported locally by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of Greater Kansas City and Central Exchange.

Why should businesses participate?
When Work Works provides employers with free benchmarking in a range of areas related to workplace flexibility and family-friendly policies based on business size and type. When Work Works also provides a host of resources to businesses interested in implementing “workflex” policies. Kansas City companies that participate will have the chance to be recognized at a local awards ceremony.
The current awards cycle is closed. SHRM-KC will notify members when the next award cycle is available for submissions.
