Professional Development & Networking

Professional Development. Our monthly programs, seminars, webinars and annual conference explore a wide range of HR topics such as workplace trends and strategy, diversity/equity/inclusion/belonging, and compliance with state and federal legislation. Members are also encouraged and invited to attend the annual SHRM Missouri State Conference. See our upcoming events...

Forge a Professional Circle of Colleagues. Each gathering of SHRM-KC, whether in-person or virtual, provides an opportunity to interact with the best and brightest HR professionals in the Kansas City area. In addition to our educational programming, social events and community partnering activities allow you to meet – and learn from – your peers.

Special Interest Groups & Committees. Organized discussion groups such as Coffee Chat, Diversity/Equity/Inclusion/Belonging Dialogues, and Book Club, along with Committee participation, provide further professional development and networking opportunities.

Advance Your Career. Our professionally facilitated SHRM Certification preparation class helps members prepare for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams. SHRM-KC members receive a 10% discount on registration fees.

Mentor/Mentee Program. Our program provides opportunities for emerging professionals to gain an experienced HR practitioner’s perspective to grow in their HR career. Mentors benefit too, by contributing to the development of the future HR workforce.

Membership Directory. The online directory contains a listing of members by name and employer and is an exclusive "members only" tool for networking with the over 650 HR professionals in the Kansas City Metro Area. 

Engage With Us. HR professionals and service providers are invited to engage with each other through SHRM-KC’s public and private social media groups including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Membership Types & Requirements

Practitioner - The individual must be currently employed in the field of HR as a practitioner. They must perform at least 50% of their duties in HR, (or) have 100% accountability for the HR function in their organization, (or) be a current faculty member holding an assistant, associate or full professor rank teaching HR or related programs at an accredited university. Dues are $100 per year for those holding SHRM national membership, $125 for those who are joining the local chapter only. Multiple year memberships are available. For SHRM national members - $150 for two years, $225 for three years. For non-SHRM members, $175 for two years, $250 for three years.

Consultant - The individual must be currently employed as a consultant or sales professional who is actively engaged in providing professional HR services to clients. Examples include, but are not limited to, employment law attorneys, recruiting/staffing professionals, independent HR consultants, PEO organizations, benefit consultants, insurance/401K sales professionals, or other directly related areas. Individuals must be a member of SHRM national (www.shrm.org) and designate SHRM-KC (chapter #0005) as their primary chapter. Dues are $100 per year. Multiple year memberships are available - $150 for two years, $225 for three years.

Emerging Leader - This individual must be a full time human resource professional with less than two years of experience, not currently or previously a member of SHRM-KC, and willing to serve on one of SHRM-KC's committees during their year of membership. An individual can only be a SHRM-KC Young Professional member for one (1) year. After that time, they will renew as a Practitioner member. Dues are $50 (for one year only). Multiple year memberships are not available for this member type.

Student - The individual must not be eligible for any other category of membership (i.e. not a part-time student that is employed full time in HR), and be currently enrolled as a degree-seeking student in a four year or graduate level HR degree related program. Dues are $30 per year. Multiple year memberships are not available for this member type.

In accordance with our bylaws, SHRM-KC dues are non-refundable and non-transferable. Read a full copy of the bylaws HERE.
