What is the HR Day of Service? It’s the day HR gives back to our communities! The Missouri SHRM State Council is coordinating the 2nd Annual Statewide HR Day of Service on Friday, May 3rd. Each state chapter will provide an opportunity for members to volunteer their day by lending expert services and consulting to a specific group of participants.

Who will be participating? This year SHRM KC will be volunteering at the Central Academy of Excellence by working with their JAG Program Students (Jobs for America’s Graduates).

-ABOUT Central Academy of Excellence

-ABOUT Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG)

Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) at Central Academy of Excellence: Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a state-based national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing dropouts among young people who are most at-risk. The JAG program at Central has delivered consistent, compelling results – helping our young adults stay in school through graduation, pursue postsecondary education and secure quality entry-level jobs leading to career advancement opportunities. The Central JAG Specialist works with students to enable them to achieve all requirements for graduation plus, transition after graduation to a positive destination in the form of a job, post-secondary education or the military.

JAG Students Participate in:

  • Career Development Activities: Resume and Cover Letter Preparation, Mock Interview Day, Job Shadows and Workplace Tours
  • Civic Awareness Activities like the Mayor’s Town Hall
  • Leadership Development Activities: The CAE Career Association and Public Speaking
  • Social Awareness Activities: Ugly Sweater Party and Field Day

JAG Competencies include topics on:

  • Career Development
  • Leadership and Self Development
  • Job Attainment and Retention
  • Life Skills and Survival
  • Entrepreneurship

What will our volunteers be doing? Think of the impact that you could have on these students, long term, just by potentially helping them prepare for the workforce. This would be a great time to bring your HR department out to volunteer together! Volunteers don’t have to be SHRM-KC members, we simply want to give back to the community in a big way. The following is an informative outline on where our volunteers will be needed for the day.

*Please note we will be conducting a conference/webinar a week prior to the event to go over volunteer expectations and guidelines. We will communicate the webinar through email/zoom meeting.

-JAG Student Sub-Group Leader (Time Commitment: 9am-1:30pm): We will be breaking the students into groups of 8-10. Each group will have a title/identifier to go along with our theme: PRIDE; RESPECT; HOPE; EXCELLENCE; STRENGTH; CONFIDENCE. We’d like to have at least Two Volunteers per sub-group. This will be a very important role as you will be there leading, motivating, and interacting with the students as a subject matter expert throughout the day. You will also be interacting and answering questions regarding the current workforce during the interactive lunch. This particular area of volunteering will be a commitment during the entire time at Central Academy (9am-1:30pm). It’s very important the students build the relationship with their sub-group leaders from beginning to end.

-Breakout Session Expert...Breaking Into a Great Career (Volunteer Time Commitment: 11am-12:30pm): This will be an interactive activity with the students in the form of an “Escape Room”. We have the “Escape Room” took-kit provided by JAG, and will be scheduling a webinar prior to the event to go through the instructions. We will need volunteers throughout the theater space to assist the sub-group leaders and students through the activity. Basically, you’ll be helping provide some hints and interpret directions, without providing the answers.

-Breakout Session Expert...Interviewing Do’s & Don’ts (Volunteer Time Commitment: 11:30am-1:00pm):  We will be re-creating/role playing our BEST INTERVIEW Experiences and our WORST INTERVIEW Experiences. We want the students to understand the difference, and how to conduct themselves in a way that will land them the job. A student from each sub-group will be provided with a particular role to play. The student will be provided with either an interview “DO” or an interview “DON’T”. Our volunteers will be conducting the interview on the theater stage.  Each interview will only be about five minutes. We’ll want to leave time after each interview role play for the audience/students to discuss what the “Do’s” were and what the “Don’ts” were.

-Breakout Session Expert...Dress for Success-Fashion Show (Volunteer Time Commitment (12:15pm-1:45pm):  Prior to the event, the JAG Students will be asked to sign up/volunteer for the “Dress for Success-Fashion Show”. If you’ve watched Project Runway, you know we’ll need 3-4 judges (volunteers) next to the catwalk. Our volunteers will be positively and constructively commenting on the students’ fashion choices as they prepare to enter the workforce. Students will be asked to dress the part from a Banker to a Construction Worker.

Volunteer Background Check Requirement: All volunteers are required to complete the Volunteer Background Check with Central Academy of Excellence. Please be sure to complete this portion of the volunteer sign-up. The link will also be provided in your volunteer sign-up confirmation: You will see a cost amount of $13 to run the background. Please be sure to select the $0.00 as this is free to our volunteers.
