Please join us Thursday, September 28th for our next quarterly book club!  This quarter's selection is "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle.  This quarter's location is Mark One,  some snacks and beverages will be provided but you can also bring your own! From the New York Times bestselling author of The Talent Code comes a book that unlocks the secrets of highly successful groups and provides tomorrow’s leaders with the tools to build a cohesive, motivated culture.

In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the world’s most successful organizations—including Pixar, the San Antonio Spurs, and U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six—and reveals what makes them tick. He demystifies the culture-building process by identifying three key skills that generate cohesion and cooperation, and explains how diverse groups learn to function with a single mind. Drawing on examples that range from Internet retailer Zappos to the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade to a daring gang of jewel thieves, Coyle offers specific strategies that trigger learning, spark collaboration, build trust, and drive positive change. Coyle unearths helpful stories of failure that illustrate what not to do, troubleshoots common pitfalls, and shares advice about reforming a toxic culture. Combining leading-edge science, on-the-ground insights from world-class leaders, and practical ideas for action, The Culture Code offers a roadmap for creating an environment where innovation flourishes, problems get solved, and expectations are exceeded.

Culture is not something you are—it’s something you do. The Culture Code puts the power in your hands. No matter the size of the group or the goal, this book can teach you the principles of cultural chemistry that transform individuals into teams that can accomplish amazing things together.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Join SHRM of Greater Kansas City for a pop-up webinar on how the recent Stericycle, Inc. decision from the National Labor Relations Board drastically impacts employers’ work rules and policies. Under the new Stericycle standard, which applies to both unionized and non-unionized workforces, when evaluating a facially neutral work rule, the NLRB will assess whether the rule has a reasonable tendency to chill employees from exercising their Section 7 rights. The Board will interpret the rule from the perspective of the employee who is economically dependent on the employer and who contemplates engaging in protected concerted activity.  The new standard mandates that the employer’s intent in maintaining a rule is immaterial; if an employee could reasonably interpret the rule to have a coercive meaning, then the work rule presumptively violates the NLRA – even if a contrary, noncoercive interpretation of the rule is also reasonable.

Anne Baggott, Director of Government Affairs for SHRM-KC and Counsel at global law firm Dentons, will give an in-depth analysis of the
Stericyle decision and offer practical tips and examples for updating key work rules in employee handbooks and policies.

This event is FREE for SHRM-KC Members, $50 for non-members.

Whether we know it or not, like it or not, curate it or not, we each have our own Personal Brand. Personal Brand is how others instinctively feel about us, and what they think when they hear our name. As Human Resource professionals, one’s Brand has a profound effect on many aspects of our work: Collaboration with others and leading change, creating trust for effective consultation, guiding others to effectively manage relationships, and opens pathways for effective communication. It also advances business goals, by attracting and retaining top performers

This talk explores what is Personal Brand, the science behind the biggest contributors to personal brand, self-reflection on one’s current brand, and tips on how to curate our brand going forward, with the goal of enhancing the core competencies needed by HR professionals. Using PowerPoint, it is presented with involvement of participants, typically accompanied by animated discussion, with most genuinely looking at themselves through a different lens and excited to try new approaches to their Personal Brand.

Presented by Peter Callan. Peter Callan has spent his entire career in healthcare, focusing on everything to do with people. If trust is so important for personal and professional relationships, why is it in such short supply? If trust is an inarguable universal truth, why does it seem so difficult to define and even more difficult to measure? If trust is vital for employee retention, team productivity, and a healthy workplace culture, why is there a growing epidemic of distrust in all industries? In this presentation, Cory Scheer (Ed.D., EMBA), will share the consequential truth about employee trust and how to take action on it. Drawing from his doctoral research, national research, 25+ years in professional leadership experiences, and various national and international client engagements, Cory will share how trust is definable, measurable, vital, and actionable. Cory will share how the pervasive decline of organizational trust and the ever-widening leader to employee trust gap can be assessed, addressed and improved with research-based and strategic solutions. You will walk away with a deeper understanding of why trust is so vitally important, a practical and memorable trust framework, and proven methods to take action on strengthening trust in your organization.
